A tired-looking Queenslander is transformed into a contemporary family residence with a key focus to maintain the character of the home to the street front. Incorporating the double garage into the bulk of the existing house, the garage doors is integrated into the battened ground floor to keep the traditional proportions of the house. A deliberate distinction in the shape of the old and the new was established, with a low-pitched skillion roof on the deck extension allowing for ventilation and protection from the sun. Operable sunscreens allow to enjoy the city vies during the day, but ensure the deck can be used at any time of the day. Contemporary but sympathetic materials are used on the extension, thus creating a dialogue between the old and the new.
