Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

Suspended seven meters above ground and partly floating on top of a heritage listed chapel and church this project takes advantage of an urban leftover space. Being an infill development, the addition pays homage to the heritage buildings by referencing the traditional roof shape and reinterpreting it in a contemporary way in the new façade and street presence. The covered space under the new structure allows for hospitality functions by the new tenants of the heritage buildings and subsequently, when the council planned public walkway across the block will be installed, additional retail space and arcades can be added, thus activating the block. A minimalist palette of materials allows the new addition to stay in the background while highlighting the heritage buildings to the front.
